James W. “Jim” Jakes, of Saginaw Township, passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2018, at HealthSource Saginaw, at the age of 85 years.
The son of the late Clinton and Elsie (Feuerhelm) Jakes, Jim was born June 4, 1933, in Saginaw, Michigan. He married Lou Ann Schallhorn on February 25, 1956. She survives him. Jim graduated from MSU in 1955 and later received his MBA from SVSU. He retired from General Motors in 1987 and as a Lt. Col. From the U.S. Army in 1993. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, where he served as a treasurer for 25 years and was also an usher. Jim was the manager of Saginaw's New Reformation Band for a number of years and was the event chairman for the band's 20th Anniversary Gala. Jim and Lou Ann loved traveling and enjoyed 18 cruises together.
In addition to Lou Ann, Jim is survived by his children, David and Kathleen Jakes of Hillsdale, Michigan, and Lori and Earl Fink of Ennis, Montana; grandchildren, James II and Stacia Jakes and Benjamin Jakes; sister, Barbara (Glen) Martens; and 6 nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Kalbfleisch.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Fischer Family Funeral Home, 504 N. Michigan Avenue, Saginaw, Michigan 48602. Visitation will continue on Thursday, September 13, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 3427 Adams Avenue, Saginaw, Michigan 48602. Rev. Bert Eggers will officiate. Interment will take place at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Saginaw.
Memorials in honor of Jim may be given to Peace Lutheran Church, care of the church, or to HealthSource Saginaw, 3340 Hospital Road, Saginaw, Michigan 48603.
