Obituary

Richard “Dick” Leroy Elmer, age 80, of Saginaw, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2020, with family by his side. The son of Kenneth and Harriet Elmer, Dick was born March 11, 1940, in Saginaw, Michigan. When Dick was young, he lost his father, Kenneth, in World War II. His mother, Harriet, eventually went on to marry Stan Fila, who became like another father to Dick and his siblings. They lovingly called Stan “Pa”.

Dick was a 1958 graduate of Arthur Hill High School. He then attended Bay City College, which is now Delta College. Dick had many different skills which lead him to work at Saginaw Foundry, Great American Insurance Company, Lighthouse Real Estate, Keller Williams, CMW, and Century 21 as a realtor, and he also owned and operated Wolverine Construction. He was a member of Moose Lodge 82 and the Shields Eagle's Club. He loved his dog and soulmate, Buck, his show horses, University of Michigan sports, especially football, a good round of karaoke especially when he had the opportunity to sing ‘What a Wonderful World', gardening, old movies, watching the news, and the music of Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and more.

Dick is survived by his grandchildren, Ondrea (Angelo) Benavides, Jessica Ocampo-Burnias (Anthony Pacheco), and Fred (Krystle) Schumann; several great-grandchildren, siblings, Ronald (Kristine) Elmer, Cheryl Kabat, Robert (Jackie) Richards, Geraldine (Al) Brown, Mary Jane McInerney, and Christine Houshiar; son-in-law, Fred Schumann; special cousins, John and Marilyn Czymbor and Mark and Sharon Provencher; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Schumann; granddaughter, Macayla Schumann; his parents; brothers-in-law, Dale Kabat and John McInerney; sister-in-law, Rita Elmer; and his two former wives, Judith Buck and Beverly Elmer.

Dick's family wishes to extend their thanks to Toni and Trish House, Americans Home Health and Hospice Care, and special nurses Dana and Erin, for their kind, compassionate care.

Memorials in honor of Dick may be made to Toni and Trish House, 4699 11 Mile Road, Auburn, MI 48611 or to the American Cancer Society, 615 S. Saginaw Street, Flint, MI 48502.
