Obituary
Margaret "Maxine" Bixby Steele, age 88, of St. Charles, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020, with her loving family by her side. The daughter of Alphious and Margaret (Breton) Bixby, Maxine was born September 15, 1931, in Saginaw. She married Jerry G. Steele on June 17, 1950. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1987.
Maxine was an active person her entire life. She worked at First Savings and Loan which became Great Lakes Bancorp, where she was Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager. She was involved with numerous community organizations, including the Optimist Club of Saginaw, where she served as Past President and current Secretary, and a past member of the American Business Women's Association, where she served as Past President and was once named Woman of the Year. Maxine loved traveling, reading, crafts, sewing, and music, but her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family.
Maxine is survived by her loving children, Joseph (Terry) Steele, Cathryn (David) Tatrow, Anne (John) Duby, Mary (Mark) Apsey, and Laura (Norm) Hare; 14 beloved grandchildren; 22 adored great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, James Bixby, David (Carol) Bixby, Alfred (Delores) Bixby, and Dan (Jean) Bixby; sister-in-law, Myra Bixby. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Steele; parents, Alphious and Margaret Bixby; brother, Ernest Bixby; sister-in-law, Carol Bixby.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 30, 2020, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In accordance with current state mandated restrictions, social distancing and limitations on number gathered within the building will be observed. Attendees are also kindly asked to wear a mask or other facial covering while inside the funeral home, per state requirements.
Visitation will continue on Friday, July 31, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at Fischer Family Funeral Home, 504 N. Michigan Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48602. Pastor Karen Sorden will officiate. Maxine's funeral service will be held outdoors and is limited to 100 people, per state requirements. Social distancing and masks are also still required. Entombment will take place at Oakwood Mausoleum, Saginaw.
Memorials in honor of Maxine may be made to the Optimist Club of Saginaw, Post Office Box 5421, Saginaw, MI 48603. Funds will be used to establish a scholarship in her name.

Thank you Maxine for being our friend and Optimistic partner. Your contributions and participation were always fun. You were missed when you were gone and we look forward to your return. You added a ray of sunshine to our Christmas’s with your gifts. You always helped us to look at the “sunny side” of everything and always made each us feel special. We will miss you and remember you.

Maxine will be remembered for a long time by the Optimist Club Family. We used to kid her about contributing so much money for Birthdays and Anniversaries. The members who have scrapbooks made up by Maxine will be especially remembered when we look back at them.

I met Maxine many years ago when we attended the same weight loss meetings. She had such a lovely smile and sweet disposition. Every Christmas at our last meeting before the holidays she would pass out handmade ornaments to everyone. I still have them and think of her every year when I hang them on our tree. May the angels welcome her to paradise.
