Obituary

James “Jim” Brasseur, D.O., of Thomas Township, age 95, died peacefully with family by his side on September 10, 2020 at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw.

The son of Ovila Brasseur and Gertrude (Keenan) Brasseur, Jim was born on April 3, 1925 in Saginaw, Michigan.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Jean (Siegelin) Brasseur and four children, Curt Brasseur, D.O., Jill Brasseur, Michael Brasseur and Julie McClelland; three grandchildren, Cali Brasseur, Hannah McClelland and Maggie McClelland.

Jim was born and raised in Saginaw, MI. After graduating from Saginaw High School, he served our country as a Captain in the Air Force during WWII. He returned home and completed a four-year degree at Central Michigan University in 2.5 years while running a small convenience store (affectionately known as the beer store). He completed his medical degree at Chicago Osteopathic Medical School graduating in 1960. He did his residency at the Saginaw Osteopathic Hospital. He practiced family medicine for 60 years delivering many generations of babies often providing free medical services for those who needed it. He was a hard-working physician who allowed all his patients to call him at home day or night. The phone rang constantly. He made house calls long after other physicians had stopped this practice. He was Chief of Staff at Saginaw Osteopathic Hospital, a medical examiner, a volunteer sheriff, a volunteer physician for Swan Valley High School football team and a member of the Lion's Club. He was an inspiration to his children and grandchildren producing a doctor, a chemist and 3 nurses. He was an American Civil War enthusiast and antique gun collector. He was also a practical man cutting his children's hair, changing the oil in his car, repairing home appliances, mowing the lawn or shoveling snow all the while working long hours, raising his family and caring for his elderly parents living in the same home. Vacations were few and far between due to his lifelong devotion to his patients. We recall the agonizing trips to the hospital following church services to round on his patients (“for just a few minutes” which always turned into an hour or two). Our patience was rewarded with Dunkin donuts or pizza with anchovies.

Jim Brasseur was a true gentleman, an honest and humble man, a cancer survivor, a caring husband, a loving father and a great friend to everyone and most of all our best friend. He will be missed.

A private burial with military honors will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly Michigan.

I have thought of Dr. Brasseur often through the years he was my dr. most of my life once he started his own practice. He was my dr. when I got married met my husband when he gave him is physical before we married and told him he'd better be good to me. :) My husband liked him immediately and was his patient too. He delivered our daughter took great care of her also. We moved out of town and we still kept him. When we moved farther down state is when we needed to find a new dr. I've never found another dr. who was a caring, and just a great human being as him. Sorry this is so late Dr. B. Just know we have never forgotten you. Love Linda St.Peter
