Obituary

Our wonderful son John “Johnny” Nathan Gottschalk, age 34, of Flint and formerly Saginaw, died on Thursday, September 9, 2021 following a long hard battle with addiction. The stigma attached to drug addiction and masking the cause of death contributes to making this societal problem worse every day. Johnny was a great guy who loved God, his church, and was drug free for almost 2 years. He loved his family, his dogs and his 2nd family at Life Challenge Ministries where he worked as an intern helping others. We will miss our son very much. I will especially miss him telling his mom that whatever she made for dinner that day was “the best meal he ever had”. Right now our heart is broken and we see dark clouds surrounding us, but hopefully by remembering the good times and good memories that Johnny's 34 years gave us the sunshine will return. Two of these memories are Johnny, Kayla and the neighborhood kids in front of our house skating and playing street hockey, and of course watching him play the game he loved baseball.

Johnny is survived by his parents, John and Connie Gottschalk; his sister, Kayla Gottschalk and her husband Dwayne Williams; Johnny's special grandmother, Joan Marx; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Also just a few of his many good friends: Calvin & Wendy; George, Mike, Lucus and all the guys and Pastors at Life Challenge in Flint and Detroit.

He was preceded in death by his Grandpa Shirl Marx and Grandparents John & Mona Gottschalk.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held in late spring or early summer of 2022.

Memorials in honor of Johnny may be made to Life Challenge Ministries, 1230 Dupont Street, Flint, MI 48504; or the Saginaw Animal Shelter or the Humane Society of Midland.

Johnny, so many great things I can say about one of my greatest friends brother. The car ride homes from school, the bonus room remix cds, and just the baseball stories you shared with us. Rest easy. You will be missed here by so many who love you.

I've known the Gottschalk family for a few years now, and they have become like family to me. One thing I will miss is our Woody Woodpecker laugh, Johnny and I lauged at so many things. This event has left a hole in my heart that time may or may not heal. Johnny, you're now free to hit that big homerun, and everytime I go to Banana Boat for ice cream, I will miss you not being there. I love you! Mike Balzic

Johnny and I spent much time sharing our hopes and dreams together this past year. I will never forget his smile and care free persona. He always pushed me closer to Jesus any chance he got. One of the closest friends I have ever had in spite of the short time I got to know him. I love you buddy, I'll miss you.
