Obituary
Laura Nelson Stibitz, age 42, of Alpena, passed away with family by her side on Sunday, September 12, 2021, at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor. The daughter of Nancy Kelly (nee McCord) and Sanford Nelson, Laura was born on March 13, 1979, in Saginaw, Michigan. She married Andrew “AJ” Stibitz on October 11, 2008. Laura and AJ shared many adventures during their marriage.
Laura was a teacher and administrator with Alpena Public Schools. She attended Heritage High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Alma College and a master's degree from the University of Michigan. She enjoyed extensive travel in her life, visiting all 50 states and venturing abroad to Europe several times. Laura loved being outdoors, especially when camping and fishing. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and colleagues.
Laura is survived by her loving husband, Andrew “AJ” Stibitz; adored son, Ernst “Ernie” Stibitz; parents, Nancy (James) Kelly and Sanford (Helen Dilworth) Nelson; sister, Carrie (Jeff) Lich; step brother and sister, Scott Kelly and Wendy (Matt) Dorey; grandmother, Beverly McCord; father and mother-in-law, Dr. Henry and Florence Stibitz; many dear in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Honoring Laura's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of Laura's life will be held for the family.
The family would like to thank Michigan Medicine for the exemplary care Laura received during her lifetime.
Memorials in honor of Laura may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to Ernie's education fund.

Ed and I are so sorry to hear of Laura’s passing. She was a dedicated educator who gave the best of her astute talents to Alpena Public Schools. Her students were so fortunate.
