Mary Symons

January 14, 1926 - February 01, 2023

Obituary

In the presence of family, our loving mother, Mary Frances (West) Symons, willingly and peacefully left this earthly home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.

Mom was born on January 14, 1926 to Hattie and Ben West in their home in Clarinda, Iowa. She came to Saginaw in 1947, where she met and fell in love with Joseph A. Symons whom she married on May 14, 1949. After 65 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on September 27, 2014.

Left to cherish mom's memory are her children, Gloria (Mark) Szczepanski, Nancy (Ron) Willmar, Joyce (Ken) Droomer, John Symons, Kathleen (Don) Blodgett, Michael Harden, James Symons, Phillip Symons, Daniel (Carol) Symons, Jacqueline Symons, David (Terry) Symons, and Jason (Brandy) Symons; 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild on the way.

Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, Rosanne West, Shirley West, and her brother-in-law, Earl Jones.

Being a lifelong member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, she served with the funeral luncheons, making her “famous” deviled eggs to the delight of the parish priests. She also participated in many diocesan CROP walks, along with her dear friends, Helen Breitag and Tamosa Saldana, who preceded her in death. She also had a dear friend, Lucille Black, who mom would attend many parish events with.

Mom was the videographer of the family, saving S&H Green Stamps and sending them in to get an 8mm movie camera. She took several movies of us children at home and on vacation, leaving us many memories to forever cherish.

Mary was also preceded in death by her beloved brothers, Elza West, Clifford West, Dolton "Skip" West, Frank West and James West; and her dear sisters, Corrine Kendrick, Melody Ridenour, Beda Stogdill, Hazel Maxine Reed, and Ethelene Jones. Mom cherished her family and along with the many friends mom and dad were blessed with, and is surely celebrating with them in heaven.

Visitation will take place Wednesday, February 8, 2023, from 10:00 am. until the time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Site of St. Dominic Parish, 4735 W. Michigan Ave., Saginaw, MI 48638. Rev. Fr. Jack Johnson will officiate. Burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Saginaw.

Please join us for celebration and remembrance, from 12noon to 4:00p.m., at Grace Baptist Church School Gymnasium, 4619 Mackinaw Road, Saginaw, MI 48603.

Memorials may be made to the church or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Sympathies to my Symons cousins at the loss of your mom. Aunt Mary was the last of the West family siblings. My thoughts and prayers are with you this week and in the days to come as you mourn her loss.
