Obituary

John William Furlo, 78, of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and Saginaw, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Born on June 30, 1945, in Saginaw, Michigan, John was the beloved son of Joseph Furlo and Kathryn Basner (formerly Kathryn Furlo, nee Gudritz). On May 18, 1968, he married Holly Ahler, and together they enjoyed a loving and devoted marriage for 55 years.

John received his education from Central Michigan University and earned a Master's degree from Michigan State. He dedicated almost four decades to the teaching profession, shaping countless young minds at Arthur Eddy and North Junior High Schools. John was an active member of the community; he was a lifelong member of the YMCA, in his younger years, he was an engaged member of the Saginaw Jaycees and he proudly belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution. A devout follower of Christ, he faithfully attended Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. In later years he attended Countryside and First Presbyterian churches.

John had a variety of interests and hobbies that brought him joy throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling and attending concerts and theater performances with his beloved wife, Holly. He loved playing basketball, softball and golf; and was a diehard fan of the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, Michigan State Spartans, Cal State Fullerton Titans. John cherished spending time with his grandkids, supporting them at swim meets, soccer and baseball games, and attending their plays and concerts. He found fulfillment in coaching his children's and grandchildren's sports teams.

John is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife, Holly Furlo; his children, Liisa (Goran) Bozinovic, Mark Furlo (fiancée, Nicole Pendergraph), and Robert (Dana) Furlo; his adored grandchildren, Kesten, Kaya, Noah, Sail, Zoe, Kasey, Kristen, Aiden, Amelia, Sophia, Leila, and Eva; his sister, Barbara (Carter) Pohlman; his step-brother, Tom Basner; and his sister-in-law, Corliss (Jim) Irrer; his nieces and nephew, Kelly Pohlman, Katie (Kyle) Crew, Brenna (Kirby) Wissman, Keagan Irrer. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, located at 121 S. Harrison St., Saginaw, MI 48602. Officiating the service will be Rev. Ted McCulloch. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Saginaw, Michigan.
